Martina Kranenburg

Nov. 8 and 9, Martina Kranenburg exhibits at the gallery with realistic drawings.

Martina Kranenburg, Emst, has a fascination with visual details.

Small, everyday things, brief moments and emotions. But also skin, feathers, hair and surfaces such as tree bark and stone. Martina sees much beauty in beautiful things and moments, but also in the somber, in sadness, anger and pain.

She wants to capture those details in her mind as images. But that doesn’t work out as detailed as she wants. That’s why she does it on paper or in an sculpture. That way she can share it, still it, slow it down, magnify it, but also process it. In the process of capture, it becomes more and more a part of her inner experience. It is an intensive interaction with the world around her.

Martina likes to look for information about what she captures. One example is skin. Already at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam she captured that in photographs, in plaster and in rubber . Now she does that on paper, in drawings. She reads about the skin: how does it work, how many layers does it consist of? What does it do? Scientifically, but also emotionally? What cultural charges does it have? Thus her hunger for knowledge is satisfied while making art.

The theme of the series of drawings Martina is showing is “Antipose. It revolves around stolen, small moments. Everyday moments that are generally not recorded, but according to her, contain a lot of beauty and especially intimacy. Martina magnifies them, sharing a glimpse into her world of experience. Honest, realistic drawings, also as a counterbalance to the perfect photographs we are confronted with all day long. Martina likes to decide for herself what she finds beautiful.
