May 28 and 29, Marianne Alting Brooijmans exhibited at the gallery.

Marianne paints poetry. And just as in a poem reality is often hidden behind words, in Marianne’s work reality remains hidden behind multiple layers of different materials.

The layers hidden beneath the top layer are visible, allowing her canvases to be viewed almost archaeologically. But it is mainly the material she uses on her canvases, such as pieces of cardboard, paper and wood, that makes her work situated on the border between the two- and three-dimensional world. The materials used add strength and expression to the story hidden beneath the surface.

The different layers refer to stored memories, such as of her childhood in the Biesbosch. Or to new experiences she gathers during the hikes she takes. The rhythm of walking empties her and brings her to an inner stillness, takes away doubt, and being on the road constantly gives her new insights and possibilities. Each step is a touch with history and a source for new work.
